Fundamentals and Special Challenges of Doing Dialectical Behavioral Treatment (DBT) with Adolescents

This presentation will explain how to present adolescent-specific dialectical dilemmas to teens and families. Three types of invalidation that teens frequently experience will be discussed. Participants will learn how to coach a teen through recovering from invalidation. The presenter will explain the biosocial model of dysregulation and how to maintain a therapeutic relationship with parents. The presenter will also demonstrate thinking and acting dialectically. Participants will be encourage to use a dialectical stance to develop a phenomenologically empathic view of family behavioral patterns.

Presenter:

Randall C. Flanery, Ph.D., has been a licensed clinical psychologist since 1983. He earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1983. His current position is Founding Director of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy program at Saint Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute.

Dr. Flanery has developed formal DBT programs at outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Levels of care for adults. He has also adapted formal DBT for adolescents and eating disorders, at both levels of care. He is committed to providing cutting edge, empirically supported treatments, and is trained in Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Specific treatment interests are: evidence-based treatments of Borderline Personality Disorder, depression, and eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other variants. He has a broad background in the treatment of a variety of childhood and adolescent conditions. He has long been interested in incorporating psychological and spiritual perspectives in achieving recovery in mental health.

He is an adjunct associate professor in the Division of Behavior Medicine Division, Department of Family Medicine, Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Psychological Association, and a supervisor for eating disorders treatment, approved by the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals. He is a frequent speaker to professional and public groups.
