Date and Location Friday, January 8, 2016 Courtyard by Marriott – Columbia 330 Lemone Industrial Drive Columbia, Missouri 65201 (573) 443-8000 This session will outline various risk assessment tools that are being used to assess sexual re-offense risk with persons with developmental disabilities. Attention will be given to strengths and weaknesses of the tools. Discussion on what is the difference between deviant and sexually inappropriate behavior (Counterfeit Deviance). Best practice risk management strategies will be outlined with particular attention to consumers in residential placements. Included will be discussion as to the affects of containment as a risk management strategy. Will be discussed the common over-looked risk management strategies and common risk mistakes made by providers. Objectives:

  • Attendees will increase knowledge of what risk management tools are commonly used.
  • Attendees will gain understanding of the difference between sexually inappropriate behavior and behavior identified as sexually deviant.
  • Attendees will gain understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of various risk management tools.
  • Attendees will increase knowledge of what risk strategies might be used to manage risk in the community.
  • Attendees will become familiar with common mistakes made in evaluating risk for sexual offenders with developmental disabilities.

[tab:Presenter] James Haaven is a consultant in private practice and trainer in the field of assessment, treatment, and program development of sexual offending behavior of persons with developmental disabilities. He has 33 years of experience in working with persons with sexual offending behavior and 28 of those years exclusively with persons with developmental disabilities. During that time he was the director of the Social Skills Unit and the Social Rehabilitation Unit at Oregon State Hospital in Salem, Oregon. Mr. Haaven provides consultation and training for this population throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Over the past eight years Mr. Haaven has been providing consultation and training to Her Majesty Prison Services in their Adapted Sex Offender Program. He has provided consultation for sexually violent predator programs, development of community transition programs and statewide delivery systems for sex offender services for this population. He has co-authored chapters of books in the areas of treatment theory, risk assessment, treatment, community transition and program development. Mr. Haaven is the lead author of the book Treating Intellectually Disabled Sex offenders: A Model Residential Program. [tab:CEU] Missouri Institute of Mental Health (MIMH) The University of Missouri, Missouri Institute of Mental Health will be responsible for this program and maintain a record of your continuing education credits earned.   • Differentiating inappropriate manifestation of sexual urges from sexual deviance
  • Best practices to manage inappropriate sexual behaviors in the ID population
