This webinar is designed to provide clinical staff with an overview of SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral for Treatment for substance misuse) and how to perform screening effectively. Screening is the critical first step in the SBIRT process that is designed to identify patients who use alcohol, illicit and prescription drugs at levels that create a health risk.
Target audience: Clinic staff involved in screening patients for substance misuse
Objectives include learning:
- The basics of SBIRT including the epidemiology of substance misuse, the evidence base for SBIRT and how it is implemented in general health care
- The rationale and concepts of standardized screening and assessment
- How to introduce and provide standardized, patient centered screening for substance misuse
- The basics of motivational interviewing philosophy, principles and techniques.

Rita Adkins has been with MIMH for over 16 years, and is currently responsible for the day-to-day management of the evaluation of the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) project. In this capacity, she is responsible for training the health coaches on evaluation and interviewing skills, supervising the tracking staff for the 6-month follow-up sample, analyzing the outcomes data, producing research documents, and presenting findings at meetings and conferences.
Dr. Mary Dugan is a Research Assistant Professor at MIMH/UMSL and a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT, Inc.). Dr. Dugan has experience training locally, nationally and internationally. In her role as the Motivational Interviewing trainer for Missouri’s SBIRT project she has provided ongoing training and supervision/mentoring to the Health Coaches around the state implementing SBIRT.
Bruce Horwitz, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Missouri School of Medicine. Dr. Horwitz is involved in several research and implementation projects related to substance misuse prevention and serves as the training coordinator for the Missouri SBIRT project.
