  • Program Description:

Participants in mental health research frequently differ from participants in other types of medical research in significant ways including: stigma, institutionalization, cognitive deficits, and poverty. Thus, mental health research can present unique ethical problems. Many additional protections have been proposed for participants in mental health research. Yet it is important to ensure that the ethical design of research considers the values and priorities of research participant communities. The community engagement movement seeks to give participant communities a voice in the research enterprise. This serves not only to respect research participants, but may also increase the likelihood of meeting enrollment goals and obtaining rich and trustworthy data.

This symposium will consist of keynote talks by leading researchers in mental health ethics, responses by leading experts in cultural competence and mental health consumerism, and discussion with participants.
