Adolescent Treatment

This presentation, by three of the Department of Mental Health’s leading experts, will address a variety of issues related to the treatment of adolescents. Among the topics to be covered are: components of treatment, the use of medications, how psychotherapy is used differently in adolescents than in other populations, the role of inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, specific components of substance abuse treatment, some of the newer evidence-based treatment approaches, and the importance of family involvement.

Patricia Carter, PhD, received her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia and her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Mississippi. She has been with the Missouri Department of Mental Health since 1989 working in various capacities with children and families. She has worked in both inpatient and community settings, providing clinical and administrative services. She has continued to pursue her interest in forensic psychology in its application to juveniles, and currently is a Certified Forensic Examiner for DMH and responsible for setting policy and supervising evaluations on individuals under the age of 18 years. Dr. Carter functions as a liaison between the DMH and juvenile/family courts to improve collaboration and services. Her current role as Clinical Director of Children, Youth and Families, focuses on developing policies and standards to promote quality care in meeting the needs of children and youth with emotional, behavioral, developmental or substance abuse disorders. Additionally, as the Chief Executive Officer for Children’s for the Division of Comprehensive Psychiatric Services, she oversees the operations and implementation of policies and practices related to children and families.

Laine Young-Walker, MD, is Board Certified in General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

She currently serves as the Associate Medical Director for the Missouri Department of Mental Health. As Associate Medical Director, she is responsible for clinical standards of practice, policy, coordination, and program development within DMH across all three divisions and including both DMH facilities and community contracted providers.

Dr. Young-Walker also works in an outpatient clinic in Columbia, Missouri treating children and adolescents and is involved with the University Hospital in Columbia acting as the Associate Training Director for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Program.

Howard Ross, MSW, LCSW, CSAC II, CCGC, has a background in nursing and began substance abuse counseling with adults in 1997, moving to adolescent treatment in 2006. Treating both the residential and out-patient setting. Howard is a Master Level, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Substance Abuse Counselor both in Missouri and internationally and a Certified Compulsive Gambling Counselor. Howard currently works for the Missouri Department of Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug Abuse.
