Treatments for ODD and Conduct Disorder

7 April, 2022 @ 8:00 am 11:00 am CDT

Behavioral Parent Skills Training (BPST), often referred to as Parent Management Training (PMT), encompasses a class of therapies for children and adolescents with ODD and CD. BPST therapies address childhood ODD and CD indirectly through parent training. Parents will then use the skills learned in training to manage behavior differently. Parents can expect permanent behavioral change when these skills and techniques are used consistently over time.

BPSTs are among the most researched therapies for any disorder, having a 65 – 85% success rate in multiple randomized controlled trial studies. Although BPST therapies have demonstrated promising results since the early 1960s, dissemination of these programs has been lacking. A primary goal of this presentation is to promote awareness of BPST therapies and encourage other therapists to consider them when faced with a child or adolescent with ODD or CD.

LECTURE OBJECTIVES

Participants will be able to

  1. Describe Behavioral Parent Skills Training
  2. Discuss the contributing factors toward the development of childhood oppositional behavior
  3. Review BPST Parenting Skills & Techniques
