An Introduction to Trauma-Informed Schools

This program will provide participants with a basic understanding of the definition of and rationale for trauma-informed schools. The program will also introduce trauma-informed screening and a variety of trauma-informed practices that can be implemented in a school setting. Finally, participants will be provided with a brief overview of available research evidence supporting trauma-informed schools.

Objectives:

  • Site the definition of trauma-informed schools
  • Discuss the importance of trauma-informed schools
  • Describe a trauma-informed screening in a school setting
  • List the principles and practices of trauma-informed schooling
  • Discuss outcomes associated with trauma-informed schools

Presenter:

Laura Kaehler, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist at the Children’s Advocacy Services of Greater St. Louis at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. She received her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the University of Oregon in 2014. Dr. Kaehler completed her pre-doctoral internship at Duke University Medical Center, and she also participated in a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of North Carolina, Department of Psychology. Dr. Kaehler’s clinical and research interests are in the areas of trauma sequelae, trauma-informed parenting, and prosocial behavior. She is also interested in program evaluation and implementation. At UMSL, Dr. Kaehler conducts individual and group therapy, program administration, and research.
