Program Description
This workshop explores the implications for ethical practice across disciplines (social work, counseling, etc.) as we transform to a system emphasizing Behavioral Health outcomes and expanded “professional boundaries” that are often indicated and justified in creative, individualized, collaborative, and innovative interventions that are directed at many levels. In addition to re-considering conventional concepts around ethical practice (confidentiality, informed consent, autonomy, self-determination, non-maleficence, fidelity, conflict of interest, dual relationships, etc.), this workshop includes a critical analysis of the concept of power in the interpersonal helping relationship, and how providers understand their purpose. Group (peer) supervision is explored as an effective and efficient strategy to promote and assure ethical decision making in complex and challenging helping situations.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this program, attendees will able to:
- Providers will identify and discuss common ethical concepts and principles within the Social Work Code of Ethics; the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Code of Ethics; and the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics.
- Providers will understand the practice implications for issues around confidentiality, informed consent, potential for exploitation, release of information, duty to warn, and collaborative intervention planning and collaborative documentation.
- Providers will engage in a critical analysis of power in the helping relationship and integrate this knowledge in the helping relationship to promote service participant goal attainment and social well-being.
- Providers will explore the goals and process of group supervision and utilize this approach to ensure attention to Ethical practice, with particular attention to creativity, innovation, and expanding the traditional “boundaries” of the helping relationship.
- Providers will discuss the demands of evidence-informed practice, and practice informed research as important aspects of ethical practice.

Walter Kisthardt, MSW, PhD
Walter Kisthardt, MSW, PhD is currently a professor and director of the new MSW program at Park University in Parkville, Missouri. Dr. Kisthardt is one of the original conceptual framers of the Strengths Perspective in Social Work Practice. He has provided training and technical assistance with programs and state of offices of mental Health/Substance Abuse in 43 states around the nation over the past twenty years. He has worked with MIMH over the years presenting to the professionals of Missouri and has traveled to England, New Zealand and South Africa to share his knowledge. His research has focused on evaluating the impact of Strengths Based, Person-Centered, Recovery oriented practice. He is currently engaged in a Training the Trainer project in Kansas to increase the capacity of mental health professionals and substance abuse counselors and case managers to become certified in “Person Centered Case Management.”
