This session will outline and discuss best practice assessment tools and treatment approaches in managing the risk for sexual offending behavior by adult persons with intellectual disabilities. Attention will be given to: what risk tools are validated for this population or what non-validated tools can be utilized. There will be a focus on how best practice standards are identified and what those best practice treatment strategies are. This discussion will include reviewing what treatment models can be adapted for persons with intellectual disabilities. Finally, there will be a discussion as to how treatment progress can be measured and common programming errors made by SVPs with this population.

Objectives:

  • Attendees will gain understanding of what assessment risk tools are useful for ID population.
  • Attendees will gain understanding of various treatment models used.
  • Attendees will gain understanding of best practice program components.
  • Attendees will gain understanding of how treatment progress can be measured.
  • Attendees will become familiar with common mistakes made in SVPs with this population.

James Haaven is a consultant in private practice and trainer in the field of assessment, treatment, and program development of sexual offending behavior of persons with developmental disabilities. He has 33 years of experience in working with persons with sexual offending behavior and 28 of those years exclusively with persons with developmental disabilities. During that time he was the director of the Social Skills Unit and the Social Rehabilitation Unit at Oregon State Hospital in Salem, Oregon. Mr. Haaven provides consultation and training for this population throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Over the past eight years Mr. Haaven has been providing consultation and training to Her Majesty Prison Services in their Adapted Sex Offender Program. He has provided consultation for sexually violent predator programs, development of community transition programs and statewide delivery systems for sex offender services for this population. He has co-authored chapters of books in the areas of treatment theory, risk assessment, treatment, community transition and program development. Mr. Haaven is the lead author of the book Treating Intellectually Disabled Sex offenders: A Model Residential Program.

  • Intellectually Disabled (ID) sex offender treatment related issues
  • Measurement of treatment progress in ID sex offenders
  • Common mistakes made in the treatment programming of ID persons in SVP programs
